This structure was once a warehouse and workshop with dramatic glazed exterior staircases; built in the 50s, it resembles one of the first modern buildings, the Fagus Factory, a shoe last factory in Germany by Walter Gropius, (See Wikipedia Commons photo) built several decades earlier. |
New UseSince 2001 the building has a new use as a kind of visual cultural center with a variety of visual arts organizations occupying the space--as well as an excellent seafood restaurant (Las Palmas), which my husband and I ate at! A few years later the Benthem Crouwel firm added a two-story penthouse three metres above the Las Palmas building, held on thin steel columns so that it seems to be floating. It houses the headquarters of OVG, a real estate developer. The dramatic rounded ends contrast with other buildings in the area and give the penthouse a unique skyline identity. | ||
