		A union of the arts The Arts and Crafts movement (or modernista in Spain) believed the whole human environment should be a work of art. Various media are used in this interior as well--from mosaic, to woodcraft, to stained glass, to furniture.
Trencadis-tiled columns Trencadis is a Catalan word (from "trencar" meaning to break) signifying a type of mosaic in which shards from broken waste tiles are used to clad a surface. Gaudí was the first to use this technique. See, for example, Gaudí's Park Güell. These two elaborate columns provide structural support as well as serving as large lighting fixtures and as seats. They terminate in ceramic sculptures like those of the exterior.
