Palazzo Chiericati

Andrea Palladio
begun 1550

The front facade

Now the Museum of Vicenza, this bulding was once completely surrounded by water. Like the Basilica, it follows classical prototypes with the Doric order on the bottom register and the Ionic on the second floor. Similarly, this civic building has open loggias. The strong horizontality is countered by statues on the flat roof which punctuate the vertical elements.

Other buildings on this site by Palladio include: the Basilica, Loggia Bernarda, La Rotonda (Villa Capra), and San Giorgio Maggiore.
