Loggia Bernarda

Andrea Palladio
begun 1571

Three arches in the front are supported by piers with "gigantic" engaged columns of unfaced brick. The side features a single arch. The entablature moves forward over the columns. (See also the Basilica.) The in and out movement prefigures Baroque architecture. This building is now the home of the Town Council.

Other buildings on this site by Palladio include: the Basilica, La Rotonda (Villa Capra), Palazzo Chiericati and San Giorgio Maggiore.
