Norton House

Frank Gehry
1983-84

Located on a narrow site on the boardwalk of Venice, this beach house still seems private with a second floor living room and terrace. (The stairway leads to the living room terrace.)

Views of the front

The ground floor, sheathed in blue tile, has a studio and a garage at the rear. Bedrooms occupy the third floor. Like many of Gehry's works, it uses various materials: concrete blocks, tile, stucco, and the surprising red chimney.

The study

The post-modern joke is the "private perch," as Gehry called it, a kind of life-guard stand since the owner had once had that job.

Other works by Gehry on this site include: California Aerospace Museum, Edgemar Mall, Frances Howard Goldwyn Regional Branch Library, Indiana Avenue Houses, Loyola Law School, Spiller House, University of Toledo Art Building, and Vontz Center for Molecular Studies.
