Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum

The Mall facade

While contemporary in idiom, the four monolithic blocks comprising the long structure, with alternating dark glass sections, harmonize with the Neoclassical National Gallery across from it on the Mall. Both are also built of the same Tennessee marble. The narrow slit windows in the marble sections also echo the recessed windows in the nearby Hirshhorn Museum.
