Bank of Indochine (now Vietcombank)

Georges André Trové
1930

The Art Deco front

The design of this bank illustrates that at this historical time period (the 1930s), Vietnamese architecture (via the French) was following the most avant garde styles--in this case art deco. See the Hall of State (originally State of Texas Building) in Dallas, or the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D. C. for similar examples, contemporary with this Asian bank.

Like most Art Deco buildings, this bank is very geometrical with a flat roof. It has very little ornamentation and has a planar, industrial look. It does, however, have balustrades on the main floor loggia, Asian design motifs at the top of each bay, and a central emphasis with the "modern" dome.
