The Swedish sculptor, who became an American citizen, designed many large sculptures, some of which were fountains, in the United States, where he was active in the 1930s and 1940s. He was a resident sculptor and head of the Department of Sculpture at Cranbrook Academy in Michigan. See his Europa and the Bull there. Originally The Sisters had been part of an intimate garden; today, after expansion in this residential college area, buildings serve as the backdrop.
