James A. Baker III Hall, Rice University

Hammond Beeby & Babka and Morris Architects
1997

Home of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and the Department of Social Sciences

This building is named for the grandson of the first chairman of Rice's Board of Trustees and the Houston lawyer who served both President Reagan (as chief of staff in his first term and Secretary of the Treasury in his second term) and President George Bush as Secretary of State. This square building is organized around a central court. Although it is primarily a two-story building, the third floor attic provides additional space.
Like many of the new buildings on the Rice campus, this one respects the style of the older architecture--it too looks vaguely Moorish. The triple-portal entrance is emphasized by the stone details and the recessed doors and windows above them. The brick and granite paved plaza (Lee and Joe Jamail Plaza), designed by Sasaki Associates, 1998, features a low, domed fountain.
