The tsar as monk

The contemplative tsar is dressed in robes of a monk and holds a rosary. Hamilton says he is "slumped on his throne remorsefully contemplating his crimes" (394).
 

 
This sculpture made the artist famous; its realism, emotional quality, and novelty were considered remarkable.
