Department Store de Bijenkorf

		A boxy department store Breuer had studied at the Bauhaus, which partly accounts for the simplicity of form, although the sealed box functions well for sales floors.
Tiny vertical windows for the store interior; restaurant and offices with larger windows There are, of course, display windows all along the ground floor. The facade is clad in travertine, mostly in a honeycomb pattern. (Bijenkorf means beehive.)
Monumental sculpture, so-called The Thing, by the Russian sculptor Naum Gabo This was apparently added because Breuer's design did not conform to the building line next to the grand avenue (Coolsingel). This venerable department store is across the street from the grand Exchange and World Trade Center.
