"The Ship" (workers' housing)--page two (of 2 pages)

Michel de Klerk
1920

Oblique views of the short side of the triangular plan showing the rounded corners

A corner of the triangular plan--the so-called "Cigar"

This building has imaginative masonry design--not only string courses dividing the registers but the bulging corner design, a challenge for the brick layer! (For a post-modern version of such challenging masonry, see the designs of Frank Gehry, especially his Vontz Center for Molecular Studies, University of Cincinnati and his Lewis Building, Case Western Reserve.)

The undulating roof line and the creative window design

Oddly-shaped windows and entrances to the residences

There is a great deal of sculptural decoration on the building, which I was unable to photograph. Most of the time I was at the site it was pouring rain.
