begun in 1500's; gradually expanded by the Discalced Carmelites in the 17th century

The simple front of the parish church

Above the door is yet another version of the Virgin of Carmen. (See also the outside of the gate--page 2 for another tile panel of this Virgin.) In the topmost niche a statue of the Virgin and Child watches over the complex of religious buildings.
 
According to an unpublished manuscript by Richard Perry, the facade of this chapel, visible from the gateway, was redecorated in the 1900s. Here the coat of arms of the Discalced Carmelites is elaborately framed in stucco Moorish designs. See page 2 for an explanation of this insignia.
