Church of San Domenico

1737-56
Rosario Gagliardi

Dramatic two-story facade

The plan is an elongated Greek cross with shallow transepts and a dome over the crossing. The convex front has a curved central bay with blind windows in the side curves. The side bays (and portals) resume the rectilinearity that characterizes the church as a whole.

Baroque details: carved dogs finial, interlocking foliate volutes, inventive anthropomorphic capital

Left and center: side portal bay; right curved bay between the main portal and a side portal bay

Note the carved grotesque man entwined in foliage on the side molding (center).
