Hotel Grand Hyatt, Marlene Diedtrich Platz

José Rafael Moneo
1998

One of the least dramatic buildings in the Potsdamer Platz area

The facing differs here from many of the adjacent buildings, more often in a yellowish terra cotta, and also the simple style, essentially a flat-roofed block, differs from the spectacular acute angles and dazzling glazing of the most prominent structures.

Main entrance

The red sandstone facade has a kind of perforated look with windows resembling the famous Chicago window of the buildings in the early part of the 20th century. The central image shows part of the adjacent building, Moneo's Mercedes-Benz AG Head office, as well as the clever corner windows, not quite as open but reminiscent of Frank Lloyd's Wright's corner windows.
