City Hall

Hyman W. Witcover

Classical vocabulary

This city hall uses classical vocabulary with a rusticated lower register, the gigantic order in the loggia of the second register, and a simpler top register. The statues at the top complete the vertical line of the columns in the second register, a classical device seen, for example in Michelangelo's Palazzo dei Conservatori.
The pedimented windows, however, in the second register look singularly odd--sort of disembodied tops to the windows.

A domed city hall

This city hall, like many capitol buildings, is domed. The dome is covered with 23 carat gold leaf.
