Just as the powerfully modeled man is freeing himself from the stone block (the hammer is poised to strike the chisel), this work symbolizes man's efforts to define his own character and carve his own future.

One of the earliest works in Brookgreen Gardens, The Puritan is by one of the first and most influential American sculptors. Determination is the keynote in this depictions of a Puritan, dressed in the 17th century fashion, holding a Bible, and marching forward.
