Large courtyard between Thaw Art History Center and Tishman HallAccording to Khristaan Villela, "Santa Fe's building codes require that exteriors be painted in earth tones--read shades of adobe. Legorreta's team was able to convince city officials that brick red and burnt orange were in fact 'earth tones'" (Adobeairstream, February 7, 2012). No such rule applied to interior courtyards; thus, this one is in vivid pink.
Note the large emphatically boxed window and the smaller and lower box on the opposite wall. These elements are on the exterior of the Santa Fe Art Institute and both recur more dramatically in Legorreta's later skyscrapers of Plaza Juarez in Mexico City.
