Theater--page 2 (of two pages)

12 BCE; enlarged in 196 CE; restored during the late Empire; restored/partly reconstructed 1940 CE

View of the orchestra (where in Roman theaters the audience sat), the proscenium, with concave and alternating rectangular niches, the void where the stage of wooden boards was, and the remains behind this brick wall of the scaena, which is thought to have been two-stories high; right: detail of the molding

The Piazzale delle Corporazioni or Forum of the Corporations is directly behind the stage and aligned with it.

Theatrical masks, probably decoration of the theater

Today these masks are mounted on what remains of the wall of the scaena.

Architectural fragments of earlier triumphal arches

According to historical sources, triumphal arches once existed on the Decumanus across from the theater. Today only these architectural fragments remain.
