Santa Croce is the church of the Franciscans in Florence, on the opposite side of the old city from Santa Maria Novella, the church of the Domenicans. It is classified as an example Italian Gothic architecture even though the facade is actually a 19th-century Gothic Revival facade. The church is filled with famous works of art, including frescoes by Giotto and sculpture by Rossellino and Donatello.
The famous Italians buried here include Alberti, Michelangelo, and Galileo. Interior shots will hopefully be possible when I go back to Italy next May (2006). The whole interior is in restauro. |
