| Yet another Pritzker laureate designing for this campus, Siza seems more modest in his approach. First, the material is modest, red brick (apparently uncommon in this part of Germany although the Vitra campus website says that the brick facing makes reference to the production hall that burned down in 1981). The form is simple, especially in contrast to its neighbor, Hadid's dramatic slashing forms in the Fire Station. In addition, his building defers to hers--they were completed a year apart. The arched bridge that connects his building to Grimshaw's factory building across the street acts as a frame for the Fire Station, giving an unobstructed view of it when it is raised. The bridge is lowered when it rains, thus providing a dry passage across the street. | ||
