| This extension by the Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei was attached to the earlier museum, a Baroque arsenal (Zeughaus) designed by Johann Arnold Nering, Martin Grünberg and Andreas Schlüter between 1695 and 1706. Damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt in the next two decades after the war. Pei's addition comprises four floors, used primarily for temporary exhibitions. This modern addition with dramatic glass walls and roof contrasts strikingly with other buildings in the historic area. The glass-walled spiral staircase at the entrance opens into a spacious foyer. This is only one museum addition of several that Pei has done; he is known for the spectacular glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris as well as the East Wing of the National Gallery in Washington D.
