Katherine Delmar Burke School (now San Francisco University High School)

Julia Morgan

Morgan designed a number of school and campus buildings, some of which have been demolished. This structure, in a Mediterranean style, is situated on a sloping site and designed around an open courtyard--like so many of her works. The courtyard can be seen through the main entrance.

The formal entrance

The entrance bay features an arched recessed entryway, an elaborately framed second story window (in contrast to the delicate framing of the other windows) with a small balcony, and a cartouche and molded relief at the top.
