IV. Plate tectonics

Like the heliocentric solar system, "continental drift" was an idea which did not at first seem to be supported by the evidence or to have a reasonable mechanism. As new evidence came to light, this changed, and continental drift was explained by the theory of plate tectonics, starting with the idea of "seafloor spreading" at mid-ocean ridges. Now, like gravitation in astronomy, plate tectonics is the central theory and explanation in the geosciences.
