Construction began on this house in 1738, an estate Robert "King" Carter was building for his grandson Carter Burwell. It took about 15 years to complete, with Carter Burwell and his wife moving into the house in 1755. The house is raised on man-made terraces with a magnificent view of the James River from the river side of the house. The "back" side of the house (if one considers the river front its front) |
