Although the church was begun by George Boyd (an African American builder) in 1887, it was extensively remodeled and expanded in 1925. Renovations were executed by Charles T. Russell, one of the earliest documented African American architects in Virginia, and builder I. Lincoln Bailey. |
| The Russell renovations refaced the exterior (except the eastern facade) and added a new front (southern) addition, which extends from the original structure. A simplified version of Romanesque architecture was used for this front facade with a three-bay entrance portal. An original central tower was demolished and the off-center bell tower and stairwell were added to the side. |
