Statue of Arthur Ashe Jr., Monument Avenue

Paul DiPasquale
1996

Distant view

The grand Monument Avenue is the site for five bronze sculptures of Southern heroes from the past as well as one twentieth century icon: Arthur Ashe, the internationally known tennis star, writer, and social activist. The statue was completed three years after Ashe's death. The placement of this work with Confederate heroes was very controversial.

Ashe wears a warm-up suit, glasses, and tennis shoes. He holds a tennis racket in one hand and books in the other.

Sculptured children at the feet of the 12-foot statue of Ashe look up admiringly.
