This courthouse, the fifth on this particular site in what was once the center of town, is constructed of Pecos red sandstone, Texas red granite, and Arkansas blue granite and is designed in the Romanesque Revival style. (See Index for H. H. Richardson). The large clock tower, which crowned the building, thought unstable, was removed in 1919. The building is being renovated and is occupied by the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau Center. "Old Red" is listed in the National Historic Register. I. M. | "Old Red," one of the last things President John F. Kennedy presumably saw as his convertible passed the building, was also where Jack Ruby was convicted of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy's alleged assassin (1964). |
