House for an Art Lover--page 5 (of nine pages)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh
1989-96, based on a 1901 design by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret MacDonald

Like the Main Hall, the dining room is panelled in dark wood. But here the dark paint is relieved by bright gesso panels, which circle three sides of the room, and the recessed lighted barrel-vaulted ceiling.

Sliding doors with stained glass inserts and table leg with inserts

Margaret Macdonald's influence is evident in this room with the gesso panels, the fireplace surround with painted or stencilled roses, and the pale, carpet with sensuous designs.

The furniture was built by modern furniture craftsmen, based on other furniture designed by Mackintosh. The sideboard design, however, was part of the original competition portfolio.
