Queen's Cross Church and Hall--page 4 (of six pages)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh
1896-99

The north side of the nave

The south side of the nave--east, center and west end

Like the east gallery, the south gallery here, corresponding to the two gabled bays on the southwest exterior, is "cantilevered out in the manner of an inn at Mishima illustrated in Morse's Japanese Homes and their Surroundings, an unusually specific example of the Japanese influence which informed Mackintosh's playful timberwork and, later, his domestic interiors" (Crawford 44). The pendant details foreshadow those used in the library at the Glasgow School of Art.

Sandstone piers with decorative carvings

The underside of the cantilevered galleries is left exposed as part of the decoration.
