Brumfield explains that Pskov builders erected this church for Metropolitan Geronti; its name refers to its dedication to the holiday commemorating the taking of the Virgin's robe from Palestine to Constantinople in the fifth century. It style is characteristic of these builders. The ornamental brick work is found in other churches by them. Here the central bay is both taller and wider than the side bays with a built-in niche for icons.

Decorative brick frieze
The apses have at the top a brick frieze with a kind of baluster design and the walls are divided by slender engaged columns which are roofed by ogee-shaped gables.
