Aurelian Walls, Porta Pinciana

begun 271 CE

Under the Emperor Aurelian (270-275 CE) a wall of about 20 kilometers was constructed to keep out invading barbarians. Several hundred rectangular towers at regular intervals protected this line of defense while round towers flanked the gates. Later rulers added to the walls, doubling the height and reinforcing the masonry.
