The southwest and south facade

Solomon Andrew Layton, who was called the dean of Oklahoma City architecture, was a prolific architect, designing the Oklahoma State Capitol, a number of county courthouses, as well as several buildings on the University of Oklahoma campus and public schools all over the state, including the high school in El Reno that my Mother attended!

This five-story Classical Revival building was constructed of reinforced concrete, an early example in Oklahoma City of that structural material. The building is faced with Batesville Marble from Arkansas. The south facade consists of nine bays, flanked by fluted columns, which end at the top of the 4th floor. Each of the copper spandrels which extend between the flanking columns is different.

The vertical divisions continue through the 5th floor with a terra cotta frieze and oval glass lights; at the roof line the balustrade is also divided. The fifth floor windows have leaded star-patterns.
