A sculptural museum adjacent to the IJ riverClose to the water, the aerodynamic building is a special focus for the Amsterdam district of Overhoeks and serves as a transition between the historic urban center and centraal station across the water and the new noord quarter, currently with apartments, office buildings and a tower. This motion-picture museum is a meeting point, connecting the old and lively new, linking the stolid brick of the historic city and the energy and light of the constantly changing. This area is reached by ferry, bicycle or car. The new Film Institute houses spacious exhibition areas with floor to ceiling glass which overlook the terrace below, underground filmography rooms, archives and laboratories.Precedents for the architecture can be seen in the works of Hadid and Coop Himmelb(l)au. (See Index.) "According to partner Dietmar Feistel, the goal of the design-which nods to the charged compositions of Zaha Hadid and Austria's most influential firm, Coop Himmelb(l)au--wasn't to achieve a specific form so much as a feeling, as he puts it, 'of being suspended between the real world and the world of cinema'" (Architectural Digest, May 3, 2012). | ||
