The porte-cochere leads to the Stable, a structure at the north end of the building to buffer the house from the winds.
 

The Stable Courtyard, with brick pavers, and the 12,000 square foot Stable complex

Today shops and a cafe (with tables in the original stalls) occupy the stable.
