Steinberg Hall, Washington University

Fumihiko Maki
1960

Views of the front--facing internally toward the campus

When Maki was in the architecture department at Washington University, he received his first design commission--for this hall--an art center.

Views from the rear

Folded plate roof and ceiling contruction covers the large spaces for the gallery and auditorium on the first floor and for the library and classrooms on the second floor. The loggias which flank the entrances and encircle the building provide some protection from the weather.

Stairs to the front main entrance; the front loggia with an unidentified sculpture and the back loggia
