Baltimore Cathedral (Basilica of the Assumption)

Benjamin Latrobe
1804-18

For this first monumental Catholic church in America, Latrobe submitted two designs, a classical and a Gothic version, the former being chosen.

The classical facade

The crossing has a large dome (not shown). Additions in the latter part of the nineteenth century lengthened the east end.

The classical porch and one of the belfrey towers

In Latrobe's original drawing the belfrey tower had a simple rounded dome, not the onion dome.
