Isozaki's first building in the United States, MOCA is primarily set into the parking levels of the California Plaza--a complex including a hotel, residential areas, and commercial spaces. At street level, the museum includes a central plaza with two separate volumes on each side.
The main entrance to MOCA and the galleries, some with natural light from the pyramidal skylights, are on the lower level.

A courtyard unites the two separate street-level buildings. These structures are of red sandstone and green aluminum panels in diamond patterns.
