Julia Morgan
1916
This early shopping center was commissioned by Fred C. Turner, for whom Morgan had also built a residence. Still in use today on Piedmont Avenue, one of the busiest commercial streets in Oakland, this complex of stores seems surprisingly "modern." Apartments occupy the second floor.
Morgan's attraction to glazed terra cotta decoration is seen in many of her works. (See the Oakland YWCA.) Later she would even purchase an original Della Robbia terra cotta wreathe for decoration in the Chapel of the Chimes (Boutelle 74).
