Hearst Building

Julia Morgan
1937 (remodeled)

The lower facade

Morgan's remodeling included both interior and exterior work. She added a large marble lobby as well as decoration to the exterior facade and an impressive entrance.

A detail of the entrance

Morgan's Beaux-Arts training served her well for this elaborate entrance with its enormous cartouche (with an "H"), the fanciful "Baroque" broken pediment encrusted with glazed terra cotta ornament, and the inventive capitals on the fluted pilasters.
