Recreation Center Gymnasium

Special thanks to Mary Louise Days, Acting Research Center Director, Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, for information about this building. Although this gymnasium is not documented by Sara Boutelle, I was assured by the current manager and later as well by Ms Days that this is indeed a Morgan building. Several attributes are Morgan-like. She did, of course, design gyms throughout her career, especially as part of the various YWCAs. Like most of her work, this building borrows from historicist vocabularies; characteristic of later buildings are the following: the second-story balcony, tile roofs (even atop columns here), arched windows with colonnette dividers--on the side and back, and the balustrade detail along the roof wall.
