The triumphal arch entrance from the Piazza del Duomo
This shopping arcade of masonry and iron and glass predates the Eiffel Tower by more than twenty five years--a comparable building in terms of the use of decorative iron work. In 1877 the triumphal arch (the entrance here) was added to the southern end as a dramatic entrance into the long northern arcade that leads north to Teatro alla Scala, the famous opera house.
The barrel-vaulted glass-roofed arcadeThis "shopping mall" has a cruciform plan with the crossing accented by a domed octagon. The arcade is 96 feet high.
