Batcolumn

Claes Oldenburg
1977
Corten steel, 101 feet high (31 meters)

This sculpture is in front of the Harold Washington Social Security Administration Building near downtown Chicago. Oldenburg claims he saw the bat as a symbol of Chicago's ambition and vigor although in other cases his works don't seem to be emblematic of a place--a clothespin for Philadelphia?

Corten steel painted gray with a lacy openwork pattern
