Balancing Tools, Vitra Campus

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen
1984

This sculpture of tools used in the uphostery trade was commissioned by the children of the Vitra company founder, Willi Fehlbaum, for his seventieth birthday. Hammer, pliers, and screwdriver--these apparently banal objects (like clothespins, shuttlecocks, and three-way plugs, etc) are typical of the subjects these sculptors depict, but here they seem singularly appropriate for this campus/factory site.
