Admiralty Arch

Sir Aston Webb
1906-11

The arch, located between the Mall and Trafalgar Square, is at the opposite end of the axis beginning at Buckingham Palace. The huge attic has a tribute in Latin by Edward VII to his Mother, Queen Victoria. The arch, made of Portland stone, is actuallyl tripled arched, recalling Roman precedents for similarly grand processional ways.

The detail shows the rusticated bands, a sort of vermiculated type of rustication, as well as elaborate variations of Corinthian capitals atop large columns joined in sections. The keystone is a royal insignia.
