Senate House

James Gibbs
1722-30

The Senate House was originally intended as one side of a whole quadrangle, but this scheme was never realised. This classical building uses the "giant" order with Corinthian engaged columns emphasizing the center portico and pilasters flanking the center (doubled at the ends). A balustrade with decorative urns tops the building. The cast iron railings surrounding the Senate House were among the first to be erected in England.
