The tower of this church, named after an abbreviated form of "Saint Benedict," is the oldest building in Cambridge. The tower's style is Anglo-Saxon, seen particularly in the three receding stages, in the quoins with sides alternately lengthwise and horizontal, and the small arched openings at the top. The circular openings at the top may have been designed to allow owls access so they could prey on church mice. Some portions of the original nave remain. Numerous changes and addition were made in later years. |
