The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower. When it opened in 1976, it was the world's tallest free standing structure. At 1,815 feet it is more than a third of a mile high. Today, however, it ranks third in height after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Guangzhou TV and Sightseeing Tower. CN originally stood for Canadian National, the name of the railroad company that had the tower constructed; although the tower is owned by a different entity, the initials have been retained.
