| Rich's Department Store, which was a downtown Atlanta institution and landmark, has been renovated and is part of this new government facility. The store was founded in the 1860s, although it was only located in this building in the 1920's. Its lunch counter was also the site of a sit-in in 1960 at which Martin Luther King Jr. and thirty-six others were arrested. The judge sentenced King to six months hard labor. | ||

The building resembles an Italian palazzo. (See, for example, the Palazzo Rucellai or the Palazzo Medici-Ricardi.) The two-story base is rusticated while the upper stories have smoother surfaces with less visible joints. A corner clock and the two high entrance arcades decorate the base. |
