Thanks to Carl Tait of New York City who provided the name of the architect and this information: "According to www.metrohistory.com, 104 W. 57th Street (technically 102-106 W. 57th Street) was built in 1937 for Horn & Hardart at a cost of $75,000. The architect was Ralph B. Bencker of Philadelphia. Most recently, the building was the home of Shelly's New York, an excellent steak-and-seafood restaurant. Unfortunately, the building has been demolished during this past year." According to Bruce Mentone, who graciously e-mailed me this information, "the New York Delicatessen . . . originally was a Horn & Hardart's Automat. They have a web site showing the building as it was when built. For a time it was a book store and then the Motown Café." | |
